What is a Moderator?

A Moderator is identifiable through the Moderator badge in Geometry Dash. This role can be granted only by RobTop himself, meaning that Moderators represent him as well as Geometry Dash directly. Their main task is suggesting good levels to RobTop for a rating. They also have more power when voting for Demon difficulty.

What is an Elder Moderator?

An Elder Moderator is identifiable through the Elder Moderator badge in Geometry Dash. Elder Moderators are tasked not only with sending good levels, but also moderating the in-game comment sections, whitelisting users on Newgrounds, unlocking updates for older rated levels, and some other tasks.

Section emote

What is a Leaderboard Moderator?

Leaderboard Moderators manage the Leaderboards within the game. They manage the Top 1000 whitelist and can ban players from both the Global and Level Leaderboards. It is worth noting that they are not necessarily a normal Moderator too. The list of Leaderboard Moderators is found here. If you need any support regarding these topics, refer to the Leaderboards section.

Section emote

Are Moderators paid?

Moderators, Elder Moderators, and Leaderboard Moderators are not paid; their positions are entirely voluntary. Moderators are not allowed to accept payment for sending levels either.

How can I contact a GD Moderator?

This is different for every Moderator. Most Moderators nowadays are active on Discord. Not all Moderators like to take level requests through direct messages, so try to figure out whether they have a server or a form if you are contacting them for this reason. This information may be available in their profile bio. Most Moderators also check their in-game messages occasionally. Remember to be respectful when contacting them!

Section emote

What standards do Moderators have when sending levels?

While every Moderator is trusted with their own standards when sending levels, certain factors need to be considered by all Moderators. These factors include but are not limited to: stolen designs or levels, the song being available, the level's length (in most cases, at least "Long" length is preferred), the name or the contents of the level being appropriate, and more.

Section emote

Do Moderators have contact to RobTop?

Yes, Moderators are able to contact RobTop. If some issue arises, RobTop can be informed through a Moderator.

Section emote

Can Elder Moderators rate levels?

No, the only person who can rate levels is RobTop.

Section emote

Do Elder Moderators sends have more impact than regular Moderator sends?

The importance of a send remains the same for any Moderator. Both regular Moderators and Elder Moderators have the same weight on sends.

Section emote

What does the "Req" button do inside the settings?

The "Req" button (also known as request button) is used by new Moderators to enable sending levels to RobTop.

Section emote

How can I update my older rated level?

All rated levels with an ID of 80M or lower cannot be updated without special permission. This is to protect them from bad updates, whether the creator was hacked or simply wants to change it a lot, making its quality very different from when it was rated. As such, older rated levels are protected and will give an error when you attempt to update them. You can ask any Elder Moderator for permission with an explanation of how and why you want to update it. If you have a good reason, such as fixing gameplay bugs or improving some visuals, Elder Moderators will unlock the level for you. Note that whether you are permitted to update it or not is completely up to the team's discretion. Additionally, if you abuse this access, all your rated levels may be locked from updates permanently.

How does one become a Moderator?

The only way to become a Moderator is by being promoted by RobTop himself. If you contribute to the community of Geometry Dash in positive ways, your contributions may be noticed by Moderators or Elder Moderators, and may be forwarded to RobTop. Beyond that, there are not any clear steps to getting it. However, this is generally what is looked for in Moderator candidates:

  • Be nice. If you are known to be toxic you probably will not get it.
  • Be active in the community. If you are hardly present in the community you probably will not get it.
  • Be trustworthy. If you do not have any connections within the Moderator team, we cannot confirm if you can be trusted. One thing is important information that could be leaked, but if no one can vouch for you being trustworthy, how can we know you will not send a ton of bad levels or use your Moderator position to hate on creators? You are a representative of RobTop as a Moderator.
  • Be able to judge levels well. We need to be able to confirm that you can differentiate a good level from a bad level.

If you have some minor issues here and there or did not meet any of these requirements in the past, you can still get Moderator. No one is "blacklisted". These are just some general guidelines to give you an idea of how you should act to be a potential candidate. Recently, we have also added a form where you can show your interest. You can still get Moderator without ever using this form, and you certainly need to do a lot more than just applying. Writing a good application is just another way of being considered. Note that your application may be read by multiple current Moderators and that reapplying is allowed at any time.
